Abstract: This dissertation analyzes the cultural representations present in the comic book Serigy,
produced by the Sergipe-based publishing collective Serigy Comics, focusing on the connection
between image, identity and belonging. The research assumes that comics, beyond their
entertainment character, constitute a graphic-narrative language capable of producing historical
and cultural meaning. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Cultural History, Visual
Culture and Visual History, the analysis considers the image as a historical and symbolic
document. The central problem of the investigation is to understand how Serigy mobilizes
memory and urban references to produce a localized reading of the narrative. The research
advances three hypotheses: the work creates the figure of a peripheral hero who engages with
the superhero imaginary through a hybrid perspective; the city of Aracaju functions as a
narrative agent; and the comic mobilizes local cultural symbols as strategies of identity
affirmation within the cultural field. Methodologically, the work combines semiotic and
hermeneutic analysis of the imaginary drawing on authors such as Peter Burke (2004), Moacy
Cirne (1972, 1975, 1982, 1990, 2000), Hans Belting (2014), Gilbert Durand (1988, 2012), José
D’Assunção Barros (2022), Néstor Canclini (2000, 2007, 2007), Roger Chartier (1990, 1998)
and Ulpiano Bezerra de Meneses (2003, 2005). The dissertation is organized into three
interconnected chapters. The first examines the trajectory of the Serigy Comics collective, its
organizational forms, and its strategies for entering the cultural market of Sergipe. The second
analyzes the *Serigy* comic book as a visual device for urban identity, investigating the
construction of the hero João Pedro and the mobilization of local cultural markers. The third
chapter concludes the analysis begun in the second by highlighting the centrality of the city
within the narrative. The research shows that comics function as devices of memory and
symbolic resistance, affirming regional production in a context historically marked by the
hegemony of foreign narratives. The conclusion is that regional comics can act as legitimate
sources of historical analysis, contributing to the strengthening of collective memories and the
affirmation of local identities.

Abstract: The theme of cangaço found fertile ground in cinematic productions. The saga of Lampião and
his mens entered the realm of the seventh art, resulting in roughly fifty films identified
throughout the 20th century. However, only a few works have sought to portray the role of
women cangaceiras. For this reason, this study examines how the audiovisual productions A
Mulher no Cangaço (1976, by Hermano Penna), A Musa do Cangaço (1982, by José Umberto
Dias), and Entre Irmãs (2017, by Breno Silveira) approached the protagonism of these female
bandits. Two documentaries and one feature film were selected, respectively. The study
investigates how these productions mobilized the memories and testimonies of women who
took part in the cangaço. In dialogue with the history of the backlands (sertões), gender studies,
and social discourse analysis, cinema emerges as a privileged space for the surfacing of
marginalized memories, enabling these figures to be repositioned as protagonists of their own
narratives. By revisiting the history of cangaço from a female perspective, elements once
considered secondary could be inscribed as fundamental parts of this experience. This approach
was made possible through the theoretical framework employed, which shed light on the
subject. Accordingly, the analysis intersects gender as a category of analysis (Scott, 1995), the
history of women (Perrot, 2007), subterranean memories (Pollak, 1989), and the testimonial
turn in historical knowledge (Seligmann-Silva, 2022). Based on these reflections, it also became
essential to consider the sertão and the discourses surrounding Brazil’s Northeast region
(Albuquerque Jr., 1999, 2008, 2013; Araújo Sá, 2011, 2020, 2023). Methodologically, the study
primarily focused on examining testimonies, dialogues, and scenes through the principles and
procedures of social discourse analysis (Orlandi, 2002, 2007), alongside contributions from
historiography on banditry. In the audiovisual productions, the main objective was to identify
the agency and protagonism of women cangaceiras. The investigation further demonstrates how
the testimonies of surviving participants, recorded in the documentaries, resonated in
contemporary fiction, highlighting tensions between oppression and freedom, violence and
resistance.

Autor(es): Almeida, Igor Trindade de
Abstract: In the 19th century and early 20th century, the United States witnessed a clear rupture in the
hegemony of thought that supported both political and economic power. This change was
caused by the accumulation of inconsistencies in what was then known as the “American
Way of Life,” or simply the “American Way.” Fearful of the system’s rupture, a group
defending Anglo-Saxonism, a conservative policy of preserving American ideals, assumed
political power, which, through “Acts” (laws) and the support of the economic elites, created
what became known as the new “American Way of Life,” without, however, regaining
popular support. This research seeks to understand how cultural power allowed the
consolidation of the new ideological system. To this end, the codependency relationship
between the fields of economic, political and, especially, cultural power was studied, which,
according to Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), exerts a symbolic, invisible power of cohesion and
social control. The study observed the formation of the new American middle class, the
“White Collars”, who were chosen to be the official model of the “American Dream”, the
ultimate achievement of life in the United States. To achieve temporal cohesion and better
conduct of the theme, we sought to investigate the producer and artist Walt Disney
(1901-1966), his biographical construction in the search to become an individual symbol of
success of the new ideology (Self-Made Man), as well as his effect as an agent of cultural
power. Although the processes of rupture and reconstruction began at the end of the 19th
century, we adopted the time frame from 1941 to 1955, starting with the strikes motivated by
ideological dissociation and the first attempts by political power to create an alliance between
the other powers, for the creation of Disneyland in the 1950s, the materialization of the
American dream. To this end, a broad range of sources was used, from animations produced
by Walt Disney, to a set of letters, newspaper materials and official FBI reports, linking this
to an in-depth study of the North American jurisdiction relevant to the topic, these analyzed
with the support of thinkers such as John Dewey (1859-1952), Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007),
and the aforementioned Pierre Bourdieu.

Abstract: This work addresses national productions on whiteness produced between 2017 and 2024,
with the main focus of analysis being historiographical works. Thus, the objective is to
present and discuss how the study of whiteness in Brazil has been occurring in recent years.
To this end, we analyzed dissertations and theses defended in postgraduate programs in
History at Brazilian universities during the aforementioned period. From this procedure, we
traced how researchers are using the theme, as well as understanding how the theme is being
applied to the field of History. We also sought to interview the main researchers in the field, in
order to reconstruct the current scenario of production. For this purpose, we interviewed the
researchers: Lia Vainer Schucman, Lilia M. Schwarcz, Lourenço Cardoso, Marcus Vinicius de
Freitas Rosa, and Willian Luiz da Conceição. We conclude that the field is expanding,
acquiring more space and credibility within the university. Furthermore, within the
historiographical field, interest in the topic is recent and belated, and we can point to a
conservatism within the field, as well as discomfort and tension arising from the advancement
of research on whiteness within historiography.
