Autor(es): Pellicani, Ariane Damasceno; Ricz, Hilton Marcos Alves; Ricz, Lilian Neto Aguiar
Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the behavior of the phonatory function and the perceived strain in Brazilian young women,
before and after a test of prolonged voice use test, for a period of one continuous hour. Methods: Twenty young
women without laryngeal disorders participated in the study and were submitted to vocal acoustic analysis (MDVPAdvanced, CSL-Kay Pentax®), perceptual voice assessment, carried out by five judges, and the measurement
of speech–strain level using a visual analog scale before and after a prolonged use of the voice, from the reading of
a standardized text for one hour in usual vocal intensity and frequency, without breaks for hydration or vocal rest.
The description and comparison between the variables and the appropriate statistical analysis were carried out.
Results: The acoustic parameters of fundamental (f0) and low frequency (Flo) of the emission increased after
1 hour of voice use, while the values for the amplitude tremor intensity index (Atri), amplitude variation (vAm),
noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR), and soft phonation index (SPI) were reduced after the prolonged voice use test.
The judges agreed with the decrease in the overall level of dysphonia (kappa=0.66), roughness (kappa=0.59), and
vocal breathiness (kappa=0.73); increased phonatory stability (kappa=0.64); vocal projection (kappa=0.48); pitch
(kappa=0.74); and loudness (kappa=0.65). The phonatory strain increased significantly after the test (p=0.003).
Conclusion: One hour of prolonged voice use seems to favor laryngeal adaptation and increased adductor muscle
activity to maintain vocal efficiency. However, the self-perception of vocal strain is evident and can be understood
as a sign of muscle fatigue caused by continuous use.

Abstract: Purpose: To analyze the television reports on the World Voice Day transmitted by Globo® TV. Method: We researched television reports broadcasted by Globo® Network in regional television news
programs from March 15 to April 20, 2013. For the data analysis, the Document Analysis technique was used.
The analyzed variables were the following: location, broadcasting period, duration, interviewed professional,
mention of multiprofessional work, orientation to the population, and the interview approach (health promotion
or disease prevention). Through statistical analysis, the interview approach was considered the outcome and
associated with the other variables. Results: On the regions where there are news programs for the researched
TV station, the majority made reports about the Voice Campaign. Among these, we discovered that the five
regions of Brazil were contemplated, in the morning/afternoon periods, with medium duration of 5.3 minutes.
The presence of the speech-language pathologist was observed in greater numbers of the interviews, as also
the emphasis on the importance of a multiprofessional work. Regarding the content presented, the interviewees
focused on diseases caused by habits that impair the voice, with orientation to the public about what negatively
interferes in the vocal well-being. Conclusion: The approach of the interviews was not, in the majority of times,
of the same nature (promoting the vocal well-being or preventing voice disorder), and the interprofessional
practice is still seen less frequently as a possible work strategy.

Mouth breathing leads to negative consequences on quality of life, especially in school-age children.
Objective

To determine whether the breathing pattern influences children's learning process.
Methods

This systematic review was carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) instructions, with no restrictions regarding the year of publication and language, created based on the clinical question formulation according to the Problem/Patient/Population, Intervention/Indicator, Comparison, Outcome (PICO) strategy: “Is the mouth-breathing child more likely to have learning disabilities when compared to nasal breathers?” in the SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, and Scopus electronic databases. Google Scholar was used to search the gray literature. The keywords “learning,” “mouth breathing,” and their equivalent terms in Portuguese were used in an integrated manner. The studies included in the review were observational, conducted with schoolchildren aged 7–11 years. Afterwards, the studies were evaluated regarding their methodological quality. The research was performed by two eligible reviewers.
Results

A total of 357 records were obtained, of which 43 records were duplicate. After applying the eligibility criteria, ten articles were included in the research scope. Half of the studies used a control group and otorhinolaryngological assessment, whereas a minority used validated (20%) and sample calculation protocols (10%). The evaluation procedures were varied. Overall, 80% of the articles showed a higher incidence of learning disabilities among mouth breathers.
Conclusion

This systematic review has shown that mouth breathers are more likely to have learning difficulties than nasal breathers.

Abstract: A atuação interdisciplinar permite melhor desenvolvimento infantil.
