Abstract: This doctoral thesis examines the social and political conditions underlying the
processes of legitimation and institutionalization of civic engagement in contemporary
Brazil. It focuses on the case of RenovaBR, the most prominent among the
organizations known as “Political Renewal Movements” (PRM). These initiatives
emerged largely in response to the critical juncture that followed the June 2013
contention cycle . In this context, the research analyzes the social backgrounds and
associative ties of the 118 candidates supported by RenovaBR in the 2018 elections,
seeking to understand how, in the wake of post-2013 political opportunities, the
organization worked to redirect its members’ civic engagement toward representative
institutions through electoral participation. The analysis unfolds across three
complementary axes. The first reconstructs the historical conditions that enabled the
emergence of the PRM – especially RenovaBR – highlighting how they were shaped
through the discursive appropriation of the legitimacy crisis affecting Brazil’s political
system. The second investigates the social trajectories and political agenda of the
2018 Renova candidates’, linking them to ideas and actors that surfaced during the
2013 cycle of mobilizations. The third maps the ties between these candidacies and
civil society organizations, revealing how political renewal is structured through specific
associative circuits. Drawing from this analytical framework, the thesis argues that
political renewal groups reframed diffuse and contentious criticisms of the political
system and the state – articulated between 2013 and 2016 – into a project of
institutional occupation. In doing so, the so-called “renewers” mobilized technical
competencies, connections to organized civil society, and the discourse of political
professionalization as strategies for public legitimation. The study further shows that,
on the one hand, such initiatives can be interpreted as responses to the crisis of
representation and the closure of the Brazilian party system, as recognized in existing
literature. On the other hand, it demonstrates that, despite their rhetoric of inclusion of
the “ordinary citizen” in politics, these organizations are grounded in a selective
ecology of civil society actors, primarily linking middle- and upper-class participation
and associative networks to non-hegemonic center and right-wing political parties.
Finally, the dissertation contributes to the scholarly agenda on the outcomes of
collective action by proposing that the PRM be understood as institutional legacies of
the 2013 protest cycle – translating social demands into non-contentious repertoires of
institutional engagement. In this sense, the emergence of these groups is interpreted
as an attempt by specific sectors of civil society to continue the political impulse of
June 2013 by other means.

Abstract: This dissertation took as its central axis the relationships between psychoanalysis and
antipsychiatry, highlighting their specific approximations, disputes, tensions, and circumstantial
alliances. Starting from a controversial history in which psychoanalysis influenced and was
influenced by psychiatric practices, the research sought to make explicit how this ambivalence
opened space, at the same time, for complicities and resistances. Nowadays, this discussion
acquires urgency in times of frank psychiatric expansion, when diagnostic identities begin to
circulate as rapid explanations for the administration of conduct. The social value of suffering
and the moralization it underwent in different phases of the construction of the psy knowledges
were also highlighted. In this scenario, antipsychiatry was taken as a critical position toward
psychiatric power, the violence perpetrated in the form of treatment, and the asylum logic that
becomes established without the need for walls. Finally, possibilities for counter-hegemonic
practices were pointed out as forms of demedicalizing practices with which psychoanalysis
could ally itself.

Abstract: The Santa Elina and Abrigo do Sol archaeological sites in the state of Mato Grosso provide relevant chronological series for the Early Holocene period.
However, research concerning their lithic industries had not been deepened. The occupations from this period at both sites were linked to the Itaparica tradition due to the morphology of some lithic pieces. Therefore, this research was used to conduct a global analysis of the collections from both sites based on a technological and techno-functional approach to the lithic industries. This was done to compare them with the surrounding lithic industries, particularly those from the Brazilian Central Plateau, which are classified within the Itaparica technocomplex. As a result, we obtained significant findings regarding this period of settlement in central South America. These include the definition of operational chains, production methods, and the functional potential of the produced lithic instruments, in addition to their disassociation from contemporary industries included in the Itaparica technocomplex. Moreover, it is observed that during this period these shelters were not used as permanent dwellings in the region, but rather as sites of support, passages, or for specific short-term activities, interpreted through the low quantity of archaeological material and the absence of stages in the lithic tool production process.

Abstract: Images play a fundamental role in the production of scientific knowledge. In the archaeological field, visual records are essential as documentation, both for analyzing, interpreting, and preserving memory and information, as well as for communicating and disseminating research. However, there is a considerable gap in the treatment, use, and dissemination of images in archaeology. According to Molyneaux (1997), until the 1990s, visual records were poorly understood or simply ignored by researchers. In this context, images were not perceived as a valuable source of information and documentation, nor were they objects of study in the archaeological field. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze and discuss the production of images (photographs) as
a form of documentary processing and visualization of the archaeological record, especially in funerary contexts and archaeological excavation work. To this end, the general objective was to investigate the imagery produced during excavations at the Parque das Pedras cemetery site in the Cariri region of Paraíba, which is part of the digital collection of the Brazilian Archaeology Laboratory, affiliated with the Center for Historical and Regional Documentation and Information (LAB/NDIHR) at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). This investigation aimed to determine whether it was possible to describe the funerary contexts based on the symbols contained in the photographs. It is noteworthy that the study proposes an approach inspired by the post-
disciplinary aspect of archaeology, as discussed by Fahlander and Oestigaard (2004). To this end, the methodology articulates Peircean semiotics, funerary archaeology, and visual anthropology. Thus, photographs are understood not only as a database, but also as an instrumental framework for safeguarding documentary and cultural skills. Since each excavation is a unique and irreversible event (Pessis, 1982), the images are historical records of archaeological work.
