O mercado turístico-imobiliário no litoral norte de Alagoas: entre expansão e contestação

Título: O mercado turístico-imobiliário no litoral norte de Alagoas: entre expansão e contestação
Autor(es): Gomes, Wanderson J. F.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to present a panorama of the expansion and contestation of
the tourist and real estate economy on the north coast of Alagoas, describing and analyzing how
the recent demonstrations against economic progress in the region are circumscribed, especially
in the face of a scenario of hegemony of this local economy. The study was carried out through
qualitative research, based on primary and secondary data, from two perspectives: 1) a
bibliographical review, prioritizing the theoretical-methodological framework of economic
sociology; 2) priority access to journalistic articles, as well as field research carried out at an
event in the scientific and technological sector in Alagoas, allowing for: a) the construction of
a picture of recent mobilizations to challenge market expansion in the region; b) the
identification of the main moral issues that permeate these demands. The results show the
intensification of popular mobilizations of a contestatory nature, concerned about market
expansion on the north coast. The actors are questioning the economic rationality of the sector,
which is crossed by multiple moral arguments. Finally, the ongoing protests generally indicate
the need to rethink economic models and their integration with the environment and local
communities.

Abstract: The mysticism that builds the city of Salvador, with versatility and also resilience of
the people, made up over time out of necessity, are now immortalized in works by Jorge Amado
and Dorival Caymmi that to this day overflow with fantasy the minds of who question “what is
to be a Baiano”. This imaginary is one of the main economic pillars of Salvador, as through
tourism the city raises investment to solidify it, in a symbiotic relationship between the mystical
and the modern. The objective of this work is to explore and share initial understandings about
ongoing master's research at its beginning. The master's research is about the relation between
State agencies, upper class commerce agency and street commerce agency in the construction
of tourism in the historic center of Salvador, but in this article it is possible to present the work
already done: the sociogenetic analysis of the region and the exposure of some conclusions
through exploratory and open interviews are examples of it. The conclusion revolves around
the importance of street commerce and its constitution as a “Contested Market”.
