Tecendo um campo: os estudos sobre a branquitude no Brasil (2017-2024)

Título: Tecendo um campo: os estudos sobre a branquitude no Brasil (2017-2024)
Autor(es): Leite, Lhais Isla Dantas
Abstract: This work addresses national productions on whiteness produced between 2017 and 2024,
with the main focus of analysis being historiographical works. Thus, the objective is to
present and discuss how the study of whiteness in Brazil has been occurring in recent years.
To this end, we analyzed dissertations and theses defended in postgraduate programs in
History at Brazilian universities during the aforementioned period. From this procedure, we
traced how researchers are using the theme, as well as understanding how the theme is being
applied to the field of History. We also sought to interview the main researchers in the field, in
order to reconstruct the current scenario of production. For this purpose, we interviewed the
researchers: Lia Vainer Schucman, Lilia M. Schwarcz, Lourenço Cardoso, Marcus Vinicius de
Freitas Rosa, and Willian Luiz da Conceição. We conclude that the field is expanding,
acquiring more space and credibility within the university. Furthermore, within the
historiographical field, interest in the topic is recent and belated, and we can point to a
conservatism within the field, as well as discomfort and tension arising from the advancement
of research on whiteness within historiography.

Abstract: This study aims to understand the construction and perpetuation of the social imaginary,
memory, and cultural identity of the Black LGBTQIAP+ community in Sergipe, with a focus
on the Festival of Arts of São Cristóvão (FASC). The research analyzes how the festival, created
in 1972, has served as a space of cultural resistance and affirmation of Afro-Sergipano identity,
particularly between 2017 and 2025. By examining posts and interactions on FASC’s official
social media platforms, as well as the cultural practices presented during the event, the study
identifies representations of Black culture and the dialogues between local and national
narratives. The methodology combines netnography (Kozinets, 2015) and content analysis of
the festival’s social media, along with related academic texts. The dissertation engages with the
concepts of memory (Adichie, 2008, 2017, 2019), social representations (Moscovici, 2003),
and decoloniality (Quijano, 2005; Mignolo, 2011), in addition to key authors such as Carneiro
(2003), Hall (2003), Ribeiro (2017), Almeida (2019), and Pinheiro (2023), to analyze how the
festival has positioned itself as a space of visibility for Afro-Brazilian culture, while
simultaneously confronting challenges related to the exoticization and stereotyping of AfroSergipano cultural practices. The findings indicate that, despite significant achievements, FASC
still faces issues of exclusion and invisibility in curatorial processes concerning the records of
the Black LGBTQIAP+ community. The analysis also reveals how cultural resistance is
articulated through performances, narratives, and the appropriation of Afro-Brazilian
memories, which are re-signified in digital interactions and organizational practices. Thus, the
dissertation contributes to understanding the role of FASC in the construction of memory,
identity, and Black cultural resistance in Sergipe, while also fostering a critical reflection on the
contradictions within the state’s cultural landscape.

Abstract: It would be a mistake to claim that the dictatorship inaugurated homotransphobia as a
state policy in Brazil; however, it is evident that, starting with the military government
(1964–1985), there was a more articulated concern to align these two spheres, repressing
gender “dissidence” and sexuality. The objective, therefore, is to understand to what
extent homosexualities were perceived as a threat to hegemonic powers and how sexual
politics was mobilized in the organization of prohibitive rules against these citizens, as
well as how this repression was carried out during the civil-military dictatorship. From
this perspective, we investigate how a homosexual culture was organized in the country
and whether there was a broad politicization of this identity, particularly with the
emergence of the Brazilian Homosexual Movement (MHB). Considering the emphasis of
previous research on central regions, this study seeks to expand these boundaries, given
that the state of Sergipe lacks more specialized studies. Thus, this research aims to
examine how the memories of male homosexualities in the city of Aracaju were
constructed, based on the formation of its “ghetto” and its tactics of opposition during the
period of political opening (1974–1985), when the dictatorship began its process of
political liberalization and the MHB was organized. To achieve this objective, concepts
such as power, sexual politics, memory, and homosexualities, among others, are
mobilized, and testimonies are analyzed through the Caderno de Memórias Transviadas,
produced by homosexual individuals who lived in the capital, experiencing not only
military violence but also the emergence of an identity and its organized movements. In
addition, written documents produced by the government, by homosexual organizations,
and by the press of the period are examined, available at the Edgard Leuenroth Archive
(UNICAMP), the National Archives (Brazil), and the Sergipe Newspapers Collection
(Historical and Geographical Institute of Sergipe).

Abstract: In the mid-nineteenth century, a considerable number of individuals residing in the jurisdiction
of the city of São Cristóvão reported holding land under the legal condition of pro indiviso
ownership. Among those who made such declarations were heirs to sugar plantations, owners
of sugar-producing estates, farmers, and smallholders, all of whom informed their respective
parish priests that they shared possession of the land. This points to the widespread diffusion of
collective landholding practices across the territory of the former capital. Building on this
context, the present dissertation examines the realization of property held pro indiviso within
the judicial district of São Cristóvão between 1800 and 1875. The research seeks to understand
how undivided landholdings were situated within the broader transformations of the agrarian
landscape throughout the nineteenth century, embedded in systems of property transmission
and everyday possession practices among diverse social groups. The investigation draws upon
a vast documentary corpus composed of various types of historical sources, accessed through
both physical and digital archives, and analyzed through the methodological lens of Social
Network Analysis (SNA). From the perspective of the Social History of Property, this study
conceives of “property” not as a static legal category, but as the product of dynamic social
relations, deeply interwoven with collective property mentalities and possession practices
grounded in multiple conceptions of ownership rights. Among the findings, it became evident
that by the nineteenth century, São Cristóvão’s agrarian space was entirely occupied by a
diversity of family groups. The use of collective practices was closely tied to the increasing
value of land throughout the century, the customary avoidance of formal judicial demarcation
of inherited properties, and the strategic approaches to estate transmission. These factors
contributed both to the integration of undemarcated lands into the land market and to the
preservation of communal usage as a means of safeguarding autonomous spaces for poor
families, while also facilitating the social reproduction of elite households without disrupting
economic activity. In this way, it becomes clear that shared access rights to undemarcated land
constituted a customary practice shaped by negotiations, consensual arrangements, hierarchical
relations, and social conflict among different groups.
