The Grounded Theory approach was employed to derive a “SOAP OPERAS SPECTATORSHIP MODEL” firmly rooted in the perspectives of 49 soap operas viewers. The resulting model reveals three groups of motives for viewing soap operas: a) mood management, b) habit, and c) social integration/ learning. Within the model, each motivation group is associated with a particular strategy and level of exposure to soap operas, as well as predominant choices about the soap opera’s national or foreign origin. With regard to Portuguese soap operas, particular attention is paid to the receptor´s social integration and learning, the latter allowing him/her to use the contents in his/her personal context: The receptor is being counseled in the taking of decisions, given the opportunity to evaluate feelings and behaviors, and to confirm or adjust attitudes, styles and behaviors. With regard to Brazilian soap operas, the motive of mood management is highlighted, though not excluding the other above mentioned groups of motives. Establishing the relationships between the concepts identified in the research, the study presents the viewers´ experiences with soap operas in Portugal. A dimensão temporal não é apenas uma qualidade complementar que as notícias possuem, mas é central para compreender o próprio jornalismo, pois o tempo presente é sua condição de realização. Utilizamos o termo 'atualidade jornalística' para buscar uma unidade teórica mínima que reúna a diversidade de fenômenos temporais, analisados na forma de categorias descritivas particulares do fenômeno jornalístico: instantaneidade, simultaneidade, periodicidade, novidade e revelação pública. Esta investigação realiza um percurso histórico, mas não propõe ser uma história da imprensa no sentido de descrever em detalhes os modos como o jornalismo era produzido em diferentes épocas e situações. Em vez disso, é um estudo reflexivo que utiliza elementos históricos e contemporâneos para descrever e analisar aspectos centrais na formação do jornalismo que sejam fundamentais para constituir uma delimitação teórica da atualidade jornalística._________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: This work aims to investigate the temporality operated by the journalistic activity and the ways as journalism acts in privileged form for constructing a specific type of social experience of present time. This timely dimension is not only a complementary quality of the news, but it is central to understand proper journalism, since present time is a condition to existence of journalism. 'Journalistic timeliness' is a term used here in order to seek a minimum theoretical unit that congregates a diversity of timely phenomena expressed in particular descriptive categories, just as: instantaneity, simultaneity, periodicity, novelty, and public revelation. This inquiry carries out a historical journey, but it is not our purpose to produce a traditional history of press. Instead of that, it is a reflective study that uses historical and contemporary elements to describe and analyze fundamental aspects in the arising and formation of journalism, which will be used to constitute a theoretical delimitation of journalistic timeliness. São analisados os períodos de campanha relativos aos anos de 2005 e 2006, sendo foco pontos da programação tradicionalmente classificados como inserções publicitárias, telejornalísticos e programas de entretenimento. Tal processo de análise discursiva ajuda na compreensão sobre os modos como contemporaneamente o televisivo se constitui um sistema social autônomo. A partir disso, compreender como a sociedade se tem hoje representada por meio do sistema midiático – no caso, pela televisão. O pensamento de Luhmann auxilia na compreensão de toda essa engrenagem midiática, auxiliando principalmente com os conceitos de tematização e acoplamento estrutural, visto que o social tematizado pela Globo ocorre graças a processos de acoplamento entre Globo e outras instâncias da sociedade, tendo destaque o terceiro setor. Todo esse processo resulta na midiatização do social, contextualizado em um tempo histórico de ascensão da mídia, do terceiro setor e de todas as formas que garantam a indivíduos e sistemas uma situação de alta visibilidade._____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: The present research, based on the systemic theory, analyzes television interventions in the social field, in particular those presented through the Criança Esperança, Rede Globo de Televisão ́s main institutional representation. The analysis focuses on the advertisements, newscasts and entertainment programs shown during the campaigns of 2005 and 2006. Such process of discourse analysis helps understand how contemporary television constitutes today an autono mous social system and sheds light on how present day society is represented thr ough media – in this particular case, through television. Luhmann ́s thinking about theme setting and structural coupling helps understand the complexities of the media machinery in a context where social themes are presented through a process of “joining together” between Globo and other institutions – in particular third sector institutions. This process results in the mediatization of social themes, and happens in a time when the preponderance of media gives individuals, systems and the third sector, high visibility.
