A Cruzada não é de todos : um debate sobre NAFTA, colonialismo e soberania alimentar do México durante a Cruzada Contra a Fome (2012-2018)

Abstract

The way in which food production and consumption takes place is directly linked to the power structures of the International System. The liberalizing character of the current food regime, which is imposed on countries in the global South for them to reach a certain level of development, demonstrates how International Relations are marked by the coloniality of power. In the present work, the case of Mexico in NAFTA was analyzed, specifically during the Crusade Against Hunger, a hunger eradication policy of the Enrique Peña Nieto administration. It was investigated how NAFTA and the Crusade against Hunger impacted Mexico's food sovereignty in the chosen period, changing the country's eating habits, deteriorating the countryside, and impacting the health of the Mexican people. Although Rosario Robles Berlanga, secretary of Social Development, stated in the speech at the signing of one of the Crusade's agreements that “La Cruzada es de Todos”, little has been done to effectively solve the famine situation in Mexico.
