Representações sociais dos ciganos em Sergipe: contato e estereótipos

Abstract

Neste artigo, adotando a abordagem estrutural das representações sociais, analisamos as representações que sergipanos, que vivem perto ou distante de comunidades ciganas, possuem sobre essa categoria social. A nossa hipótese principal é a de que os que vivem perto possuem imagens mais negativas dos ciganos que os que vivem distante. Participaram da pesquisa 300 não ciganos, dos quais 153 moram perto e 147 residem longe dos ciganos. Foi utilizado um roteiro de entrevista, no qual constava uma associação livre tendo a palavra “ciganos” como termo indutor. Os resultados encontrados mostram que as representações sociais dos ciganos são objetivadas por estereótipos negativos. Confirmando nossa hipótese, os ciganos foram representados principalmente como “diferentes”, “criminosos” e “briguentos” pelos que moram perto e como “nômades”, “aparência física” e “misticismo” pelos que moram longe. Os resultados são discutidos com base nas teorias sobre preconceito e estereótipos._________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: In this article, we adopt a structural approach of social representation and analyse the representations created by sergipanos – who live nearby or far from gypsies’ communities – regarding that social category. Our main hypothesis is that those who live nearby gypsies construct the most negative images than those who live far from gypsies. In this research, we interviewed 300 participants who were not gypsies: 153 lived nearby and 147 lived far from them. It was used an interview which had a free association with the word “gypsies” as an inducing term. The results demonstrated that the social representations of gypsies are portrayed as negative stereotypes. Moreover, our hypothesis was confirmed because gypsies were mainly represented as “different”, “criminals” and “troublemakers” for those who live nearby, whilst “nomad”, “physical appearance” and “mysticism” were the words used by those who live far from them. The results are discussed based on theories which deal with prejudice and stereotypes.
