Abstract

Tobacco production is a key economic activity in several regions of Brazil, including Riachão do Dantas and Lagarto, Sergipe. In these localities, women play a multifunctional and essential role at all stages of the tobacco production cycle. This study seeks to investigate the active participation of women in tobacco farming, going beyond the traditional tasks of planting, harvesting and processing, exploring the symbolic work that permeates the female figure within the rural environment. The research, in addition to analyzing the challenges faced by these women and the opportunities they have in the face of complex gender dynamics, will highlight the need to recognize and value the multifaceted contributions of women in tobacco farming, recognizing their inestimable value in the economic and social development of these regions.
