Abstract

This research portrays the limits and actions coordinated by the Brazilian Workers' Confederation and its peculiarities within the Brazilian labor movement during the First Republic. Conceived by intellectuals and workers' leaders, this trade union central functioned as a uniting organ of the intelligentsia that identified itself with the workers' cause, called by them as the social question. Thus, it is in this context that the organization of the Brazilian proletariat begins, which, during this phase, had the leadership of libertarian immigrants, as well as Brazilian intellectuals from the urban middle classes, mainly in the Rio-São Paulo axis. Such work, therefore, is thought through E.P.Thompson and Perry Anderson and what they analyze about the English working class, in addition to other authors, newspapers and magazines.
