A organização espacial das habitações na Vila Martin Smith e suas implicações nas dinâmicas sociais da Vila Ferroviária de Paranapiacaba/SP

Abstract

Considering that the analysis of social and architectural relationships in workers' complexes is fundamental to understanding power dynamics and the quality of life of laborers, this study investigates the spatial organization of housing in Martin Smith Village, located in the Railway Village of Paranapiacaba/SP. The primary objective is to analyze how these structures reflect the social dynamics of their residents. To this end, a bibliographic study on the Railway Village was conducted, alongside an analysis of residential floor plans and a discussion of archaeological narratives related to quality of life and mechanisms of social control. A qualitative and quantitative approach was adopted, employing the Gamma method to examine the scale, integration, and complexity of the housing structures. The results reveal that architectural characteristics significantly impact social relationships, spatial configurations mirror social inequalities, and mechanisms of social control shape the dynamics of workers' interactions. It is concluded that the architecture of the residences in Martin Smith Village not only fulfills housing requirements but also perpetuates social inequalities, thereby reinforcingnpower relations between workers and employers.
