Caso O Nome da Rosa: investigações sobre uma adaptação

Abstract

This Master’s Dissertation, presented in the format of a detective novel, investigates the adaptation of the literary work The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (1980) into the homonymous film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (1986). Using a transdisciplinary approach based on Gérard Genette’s narrative theory and Linda Hutcheon’s adaptation theory, the study analyses the narrative, semiotic, and aesthetic decisions that resulted in a successful cinematic work. The analysis revealed the elements that were maintained, altered, removed, or added during the adaptation process, as well as the reasons and narrative strategies behind these choices. The research corpus includes the novel, the film, and the screenplay used in the production, allowing for a comparative analysis that highlights the adaptive choices and narrative strategies employed. The conclusion indicates that the success of the adaptation depends on the adapter’s ability to create a cohesive and autonomous work that dialogues with the source material without being limited by it. The film The Name of the Rose is a complete and original work, capable of attracting new audiences and enriching cultural memory. The choice of a literary format to present the results sought to integrate form and content organically, making the reading more didactic and engaging.
