Abstract

In 1966, producer and screenwriter Gene Roddenberry created the science fiction series Star Trek. After three seasons and 79 episodes, the crew of the Enterprise, the name of the starship, became a symbol of the sci-fi genre and generated a franchise with 11 derivative series and 13 films set in this fictional universe. The audiovisual narrative in question was constructed both by analogies and metaphors based on ethnological documentary elements of the different peoples and groups cataloged by modern and western anthropology of Planet Earth, as well as by fictional referents that constructed fantastic and imaginary worlds and beings, in addition to the creative and innovation by the authors themselves. In this way, it is possible to say that the scripts and iconography of Star Trek show influences from religious and philosophical traditions in the history of humanity. The objective of this study is to describe and analyze the legitimized belief systems and some dimensions of religious languages based on the film analysis of the first season of the science fiction work Star Trek: Original Series. The chosen methodology is based on the descriptive and analytical study design , developed from the following steps: theoretical foundation; deductive film analysis of narrative and semiotic content from the first season of the series; creation of a summary table of the 30 episodes of the first season; crossing religious elements identified in the literature review and the phenomenological perspective in comparison to those found in the franchise; and, finally, the development of the analysis based on the religious elements identified in the five sample episodes selected based on established criteria. After the deductive and argumentative analysis of the episodes and methodological use of the Synoptic Table, there is the ability to reproduce the methodological process used in this study in decoding elements of religious language in other scripts in the franchise, as well as in other serial audiovisual works.
