A cultura material associada a sepultamentos no Brasil: arqueologia dos adornos

Abstract

In this paper we seek to throw a discussion about the material culture related to human burials in archaeological sites. We proposed finding evidences to justify the specific features of adornments for three tombs from Justino archaeological site (137, 138 and 140) that was located at Canindé de São Francisco, Sergipe state, Brazil. The sample evidences and the connection between the three skeletons were restricted to similarities between artifacts. The chemical constitution of the artifacts and the context in which they were made clear the existence of incompatible with the common typology of samples for pre-Columbian period materials. Thus, we believe that these artifacts have an origin outside Brazil and have been brought by the colonizers, especially from the sixteenth century. Attempts at direct dating on samples of bones and teeth coming from the Justino burials showed no conclusive results due to the condition of the samples (extremely friable material). These evidencessuggest that the various questionings and restlessness about the stratigraphical layers of the Justino archaeological site may be more complex than has been presented so far.
