Abstract

This paper aims to present an analysis of the 1915 drought in Rachel de Queiroz's work O Quinze, highlighting the representativeness that literary works play in the historical and social context. Thus, the research seeks to understand the relationship established between history and literature over time, such as the role that works play in narrating past events. In this context, the methodology used for the research is qualitative, based on theorists such as Brandão and Micheletti (1997), Pierre Bourdieu (2011), Roger Chartier (1990), Georgy Lukács (2011) and Pesavento (2003). The research indicates that O Quinze, in addition to contributing to human development, directs the reader to learn about the history of a people who were fighting for their survival. Furthermore, this work establishes itself as a valuable literary record, providing an opportunity for reflection on living conditions in the backlands and public policies directed at this area. Therefore, it can be said that literature plays an essential role in preserving historical memory, offering an accessible means of understanding the effects of drought and its impacts on communities. Rachel de Queiroz's work not only recalls the past, but also provokes discussions on social issues that remain relevant today.
