Ventre em cena: invenções, intervenções e construções acerca da dança do ventre no cinema

Abstract

This dissertation aims to analyze the relationship between belly dance and cinema, discussing the influence that the seventh art has had on this dance over time, through the representation of movement. The aim is to understand how belly dance was in Hollywood and Egyptian cinema, during the period known as the Golden Age, in addition to discussing belly dance as part and theme of the first cinematographic experiences. To this end, a theoretical framework is outlined that elucidates aspects of the history of belly dance and its connection with North American and Egyptian cinema. Next, orientalism, feminism and gender issues in belly dance are discussed. The dynamics between dance, body and cinema are also discussed from a philosophical perspective. Finally, a panel of belly dance scenes in the selected films is read, concluding with a debate on the dancer choreographer-researcher-teacher in the dance experience. The methodology used is a bibliographic review and the structuring of scenes based on the analysis of movement in relation to the camera, dancer and editing, based on studies by Perez (2007). This investigation is conducted from the perspective of editing and editing choices in cinema, where the body in movement is the protagonist of a dance performed in time and space, essential elements for both artistic languages. As an epistemological choice, sometimes the writing may be done in the first person, given the importance of kinesthetic empathy in dance studies and the evident closeness between this researcher and the object.
