| Resumen: | The state of Santa Catarina is part of the Brazilian southern region where rocky reefs are dominant. In view of the magnitude of fishing in this state and the vulnerability of reef environments, the objective of this study was to analyze the occurrence and causes of ghost fishing on rocky reefs. HOSTIM-SILVA et al., 2006). A total of 84 surveys were carried out around 28 reef sites, between 26o and 29°S (Figure 1) in the search for ALDFG, from November 2011 to December 2012. Surveys were conducted using scuba diving at depths of one to 25 m, with an average underwater duration of 30 min. Quantitative and qualitative data of ALDFG and entangled species (entanglement only in nets) observed were recorded using plastic board and pencil, photos, and videos. Samples (parts) of gillnets were obtained to measure the mesh size (distance between opposing knots) using a digital caliper (precision of 0.1 mm) and images were analyzed. The type of fishing gear was described in accordance with FAO (1990) definitions and the species were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. |
