Análise da camada de fibras nervosas da retina em asmáticos usuários de corticóide inalatório em comparação à população geral

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer in an asthmatic population of inhaled corticosteroids users, in comparison with the general population, to observe if there is reduction in its thickness, factor that increases the risk of developing glaucoma. Methods: An observational and analytical study with a crossectional design in two populations was made, with a convenient sample. One group was formed by asthmatic patients, users of inhaled corticoid for more than two years, and the other group was formed by nonasthmatic patients, with no clinical history of corticosteroid use. Both groups were submitted to complete ophthalmologic examination with optical coherence tomography. Results: The averages of the nerve fiber layer thicknesses in the right eye of the asthmatic group and control group were respectively 142,66µm and 133,10µm in upper quadrant; 151,28µm and 144,55µm in lower quadrant; 82,38µm and 82,30µm in nasal quadrant and 84,86µm and 79,95µm in temporal quadrant. In the left eye the averages found were 144,55µm and 137,35µm in upper quadrant; 151,14µm and 146,16µm in lower quadrant; 90,31µm and 88,40µm in nasal quadrant; 75,66µm and 76,55µm in temporal quadrant. There was no statistically significant difference between the values of the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in both eyes of the studied groups. Also the difference of the intraocular pressure between the groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion: In the studied sample, there was no increased risk of developing glaucoma in atshmatic patients with chronic use of inhaled corticosteroids.
