Associação entre periodontite e perfil lipídico

Abstract

The positive association between periodontitis and lipid profile seems to be a reality. The present study aimed to investigate, in the existing literature, the possible relationship between periodontitis and lipid profile. A search was performed in the PubMed/MedLine database, using the following descriptors: “blood lipid level” and “periodontitis” allied to the “and” operator. Fifteen publications were selected that studied the relationship between periodontitis and serum lipid levels (LDL, HDL, Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides) and the possible mechanisms involved. The studies showed a relationship between dyslipidemia, obesity, worsening of periodontal parameters and the occurrence of periodontitis. Although the mechanisms involved are not yet fully understood, there seems to be a cyclical relationship between lipid levels, periodontitis, tissue response and systemic health. Inflammatory factors such as cytokines and C-reactive protein seem to mediate this process and are also related to the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.
