Subalternidade e cultura na obra Torto arado, de Itamar Vieira Junior.

Abstract

he present research aims to analyze the situation of subalternity represented in the novel Torto arado (2019), by the Brazilian writer Itamar Vieira Junior. This condition of life, a remnant of the recently abolished slavery in the narrative, not only imposes a way of life and work of subsistence and subjection to the former slaves and their descendants, but also becomes even more complex when the subaltern subject is a character feminine. Thus, based on the theoretical assumptions of Spivak (2010), we intend to analyze how the position of the subaltern subject is portrayed in the novel, mainly in the main characters and also narrators, the sisters Bibiana and Belonísia, their father –Zeca Chapéu Grande– and Severo –Bibiana’s husband. In addition, we intend, based on Stuart Hall (2016) and Alfredo Bosi (1992), to observe, through the jarê and the enchanted Santa Rita Pescadeira, the cultural aspect in the lives of the other characters and how it contributes to the fight to subalternity, violence and oppression in Água Negra, where the main facts of the narrative take place.
