Mapeando a escola quanto ao pertencimento racial: “professora, qual é minha cor?”

Abstract

Racism is a common crime practiced in society, and the school space reproduces such behavior. To develop adequate strategies for this reality and propose effective actions, it is necessary to know the students. Thus, this work aims to discuss the need to carry out mappings of the school community, especially in terms of racial self-identification. For this, the partial results of the survey carried out at the Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro - campus Duque de Caxias will be presented. The survey was conducted in the first half of 2022 and used electronic forms, which contained objective and subjective questions. The black, brown, white, yellow and indigenous alternatives were adopted for the classification of color/race. In addition to the statistical results, the investigation brought a new problem: many respondents did not have a reference to confidently indicate their racial belonging. Students expressed insecurity with questions about “am I white or brown?” and “am I brown or black?”. Therefore, it became essential to study the concept of Colorism. The students' doubts, although not quantified, were revealed as a side result of the research and lead to new reflections within the project, as they manifest other types of racism.
