As representações de mulheres nas literaturas distópicas de Orwell, Vonnegut e Bradbury à luz dos elementos constitutivos do gênero de Joan Scott

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representations of women in the dystopian literatures "1984" (1949), "Revolution in the Future" (1952), and "Fahrenheit 451" (1953) by authors George Orwell (1903-1950), Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007), and Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), respectively, in light of Joan Scott's gender constitutive elements. Considering that the analysis and discussion of this theme can contribute to the process of demystifying the stereotyped representations of these sources, the aim of this research is to investigate the representations of women in these texts, as well as the imagery and concept of gender for these characterizations. To achieve this, this descriptive research seeks to survey concepts related to History and Literature, Cultural History, Male Domination, and Joan Scott's Women's History. Gender constitutive elements are extracted and analyzed from the latter through deductive methods. Thus, it can be observed that the representations of women in the discussed works appear as elements of the symbolic order that serve as a means to maintain male domination. Finally, it is concluded that the control of women's image and body is an effective tactic of patriarchy for the maintenance of its power.
