O anticlericalismo nas obras do cordelista Leandro Gomes de Barros durante a Primeira República (1889-1930)

Abstract

Anticlericalism was initially sown in contemporary Europe, but it also spread to Brazil, especially in the northeast. In this sense, this article aims to analyze the anticlerical reminiscences present in some works of the great poet from Paraíba, Leandro Gomes de Barros. Above all, the content of the anticlerical discourse disseminated in his works. To this end, the following privileged sources will be examined, in this case, the resulting cordels: História do Padre Jogador (History of the Player Priest, 1910); Antônio Silvino: O Rei dos Cangaceiros (Antônio Silvino: the king of the bandits, 1927). Through the reading and analysis of these works, we will understand how this anticlerical movement took place during the first republic in Barros' works, in which he expressed his value judgment on the Catholic Church through an artistic language that was easy for the backlands society to understand.
