A Paisagem do baixo São Francisco pelo artista-viajante Otoniel Fernandes Neto

Abstract

This research aimed to reflect on the lower San Francisco region through the paintings of Otoniel Fernandes Neto. The work of this artist is the result of a trip taken at the end of the 20th century along the old Chico. In this sense, the objective is to rethink the binomial History and Art in order to understand aspects that define the space studied. To achieve this purpose, it was necessary to carry out readings on the field of art and image analysis methods. In addition to taking into account the following points: Dialogues and influences, the origin of the painter, the context in which the work was produced, and the facts that mark the lower S. Francisco. In terms of sources, we mainly used the book “Velho Chico: Uma viagem pictórica” (2003), which brings together the artist's paintings on the referred theme. Finally, it is concluded that the landscape painting produced by Fernandes Neto on the lower S. Francisco presents a new narrative, highlighting the identity and memorialistic aspects, in addition to the work itself having a documentary record function about a landscape configuration in a certain time.
