O figurino como elemento narrativo em The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the study of costumes in the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), by Jim Sharman, and how they play a crucial role in the characterization of the protagonist and antagonist characters. To deepen the examination of these costumes, the study is divided into four parts with the objectives of: 1) Investigating the historical and cultural period in which the film was released in order to understand its references; 2) Studying the clothing used in the characterization of the characters, based on the cinematographic language of Marcel Martin; 3) Analyzing the cinematographic narrative elements used in the construction of the story, through the narrative structure and its aesthetic elements; 4) And the application of Semiology to costumes, investigating how aesthetic choices influence the production of meaning and the evolution of characters throughout the narrative. The main reflections are supported by the following theorists: Barthes et al. (1972) Barthes (2005), Butler (2018), Hutcheon (1991), Jameson (2006a and 2006b), Kwitko (2011), Guinsburg and Barbosa (2008), Martin (2005), Vogler (2006), Reales and Confortin (2008), Saussure (2006) and Souza (2015).
